Biomacromolecular Drug Delivery

The Formulation and Stability of Peptides, Proteins and siRNA

Therapeutics based on biomacromolecules - e.g. peptides and proteins - constitute a growing share of the new drugs coming onto the market. Concurrently, biomacromolecules present an extraordinary challenge with regard to their formulation, being generally labile molecules with difficulties in passing biological barriers.

The research of the group in the field of drug formulation of biomacromolecules spans a wide area, from pharmaceutical-chemical characterization to studies of the fate of the formulations in vivo. The research is focused on oral and parenteral formulations. The formulations under study are polymer- and lipid-based formulations, and they are examined with regard to controlled release properties and enhanced stability of the drug molecule. The group is especially proficient in the physical and chemical stability of proteins in the drug formulations, and a major part of the research is focused on conformational changes and aggregation of proteins in pharmaceutical relevant systems.

The groups research is carried out in collaboration with research groups from other departments at the Faculty and University, other Danish and foreign universities, governmental institutions and pharmaceutical industries.
An example is the MediTrans project funded by the European Comission
