Drug Transporters in ADME

Research in the group
We investigate how the absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of drugs are influenced by membrane transporters. This includes studies on intestinal absorption of drugs and prodrugs, via nutrient transporters, transport of compounds though blood-brain barrier models, and studies of drug excretion in the kidneys. The practical work includes physicochemical studies of drugs, prodrugs and model drugs, ADME studies in cell models and characterisation of relevant membrane transport proteins.
The group consists of 3 associate professors, one assistant professor, two post doc's and  a technician. We work in a cross-disciplinary fashion and can offer an exciting work environment.

My main area of interest is drug transporters in barrier tissues. Previous research have focused on peptide transporters in barrier tissues such as intestinal epithelium, kidney and lung. Methods include radioisotope flux studies, immunohistochemistry using confocal laser scanning microscopy, molecular biology and electrophysiology. Projects are performed in close collaboration with colleauges at the department, as well as external academic and industrial partners. At the moment I focus on characterisation of cell models of theblood-brain barrier. Transporter expression, receptor-mediated uptake of drug compounds and regulation of barrier properties.

How can a formulation design with focus on membrane transporters alter drug pharmacokineitcs and -dynamics (PK/PD)? By methods such as radioisotope transport studies in cell models or whole tissue preparations, molecular biology and analytical chemistry this is investigated in vitro and in vivo.
