Hands-on Reference Manager

Course objectives

The course objectives are to enable participants to handle references on the computer via Reference Manager software and to import bibliographic information from on-line databases with focus on PubMed and Web Of Science. To handle the 'cite while you write' function - to write an article in Word, adding citations in the text and instantly formatting citations and bibliography in different styles.

General contents and topics

The introduction, instruction and hands-on training will introduce participants to:

  • Building databases
  • Database maintenance
  • Importing bibliographic information from on-line databases with focus on PubMed and Web of Science
  • Searching and downloading from bibliographic databases
  • Searching in and editing references
  • Building keyword lists and synonyms
  • Cite While You Write: creating a paper with properly formatted citations and bibliography
  • Demonstration: using and formatting filters and styles

The course presents several other functions and will focus on version 12.

RefVizTM, Web Publisher, and RefMan on a Netwotk are not included in this course.

General information

The teaching methods will be lectures and "hands-on". The number of hours is 3.5.

No formal evaluation will take place. Participants are welcome to bring their own downloaded references.

No fee for PhD students from Danish universities.

The course addresses PhD students from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Applicants enrolled in part-time master's programs at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Copenhagen may participate in the course.

Participants must have at least superficial knowledge of information searching in PubMed or other bibliographic databases.
