CHANCE Seminar 03 - Advanced Classification Methods by Dr. Federico Marini
It is a pleasure to announce that the subscription for the third seminar of the CHANCE seminar series is officially open now.
This seminar is mainly focused of giving a practitioner perspective of several advanced/non-linear classification methods (e.g. Artificial Neural Networks and Supported Vectors Machine). We also have the pleasure of announcing that the seminar will be given by Dr. Federico Marini, one of the most well-recognized world expert in classification methods.
This seminar is a perfect follow-up of CHANCE seminar 01 - Classification methods in Chemistry given by Dr. Davide Ballabio. Nevertheless, it is not mandatory to have attended that seminar for being able to join us in the advanced seminar. Just a little knowledge about PCA, PLS and MATLAB is required.
European flavour award for Nor
First year PhD student Nor Qhairul Izzreen Mohd Noor from Q&T has received an award of €3000 from European flavour industries for her PhD study plan “Effect of fermentation conditions on flavour formation in whole grain bread” sponsored by DSM Food Specialists, Frutarom, Givaudan, International Flavours & Fragrances, Kerry Ingredients & Flavours, Kikkoman, Lesaffre International, Nestle and Unilever, an initiative aimed at reducing the current shortage of flavour experts.

CHemometric ANalysis CEnter
The CHemometric ANalysis CEnter (CHANCE) is very pleased to announce its new series of seminars for 2012.
The seminars are prepared always having in mind the researchers, MsC and PhD students who want to learn how to extract more information from their data sets and to improve their experimental designs by using advanced data analysis techniques.
The seminars are intensive one- or two- day classes where the students will learn the basic knowledge of the theoretical aspects of different data analysis tools and will practice with real cases (the students are also welcome to bring their own data sets to work with).
The subscription is for FREE for all the seminars, and they are open to all interested people (MsC, PhD, Post-doc, technicians, Professors, industrial partners, etc).
We are happy to announce that the subscription for the seminar 'Design of Experiments' is already open (The announcement is attached as well)
Metabolomics 2012
The 2012 annual meeting of the Metabolomics Society has a program full of practical workshops and parallel sessions covering biological and technological topics. The meeting is in Washington DC in June.

On-line detection of undesired metabolites in slaughter carcasses
New Advanced Technology Foundation project at Q&T. A collaboration between Carometec A/S (Klavs Martin Sørensen) and Q&T (Søren Balling Engelsen) is going to develop an on-line method for reliable detection of boar taint in slaughter carcasses which in the long run will eliminate the need for castration of male piglets.

A SECOND CHANCE

Søren Balling Engelsen is leader of the metabonomics work package in a new FP7 European Project: Low cost technologies and traditional ingredients for the production of affordable, nutritionally correct foods improving health in population groups at risk of poverty.
The project will i) define an innovative strategy based on a socio-economic study of the composition of the most significant EU populations at-risk-of-poverty and ii) verify the relative existing nutritional deficiency via a holistic approach ensured by metabonomics investigations correlating the non-healthy diet to real metabolism alterations.

Evrim Acar receives Sapere Aude grant
Higher Education Minister, Morten Østergaard, gave the opening speech at this year's Elite Research conference. HRH Prince Joachim, Morten Østergaard and Chairman of the Independent Research Council, Jens Christian Djurhuus, honored the recipients of the prestigious Sapere Aude research career programme of which Evrim Acar was one. She was awarded for a project on coupled matrix, tensor factorizations - also known as multiblock models.

Q&T the only place in Denmark where geosmin in fish meat can be measured
The volatile compound geosmin (geo = earth, soil; osme = smell) is an increasing cause of muddy off-flavour in aquacultured fish. At Q&T the relationship between geosmin in fish, geosmin in water and degree of off-flavour has been investigated and a good correlation was found. Analysis of volatiles in water samples is commercially available, but determination of volatile content in fish is performed only by special laboratories. Knowledge on the relationship between a specific geosmin concentration in the water and an expected content in the fish will, therefore, allow fish farmers to act on critical geosmin concentrations.
Q&T involved in COST Action CM1103
COST Action is an EU coordinated networking project where specialists from all over Europe are joined together to work on a project. Q&T is part of one COST Action group working on “Structure-based drug design for diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases”. In the spirit of the COST Action, it is possible for young researchers to apply for money to stay abroad in other participating research organizations.

The inSPIRe project

Q&T is strongly engaged in inSPIRe, which is a new major strategic Public-Private platform for innovation and research in the food science area.
inSPIRe has three pillars: (i) Engineering Food Production (Pillarleader Lotte Bach Larsen) for development of the food productionchain of the future, (ii) Process Analytical Technology (pillarleader Søren Balling Engelsen) for optimization of quality and reduction of energy plus water consumption, (iii) Molecular Functionality (pillarleader Richard Ipsen).
Q&T will participate in all three projects in the PAT pillar: FT-IR based solutions (PhD Carl Emil Aae Eskildsen), Process Water (PhD Jannie Krog Jensen) and MicroPAT (PhD Parvaneh Ebrahimi).
