A bachelor’s degree in pharmacy is the admission requirement for the Master of Science programme in pharmacy.
The MSc in Pharmacy programme is taught in Danish. The University of Copenhagen does not offer BSc and MSc programmes in pharmacy in English.
Students in the MSc programme spend six months each on compulsory and elective courses, complete a six-month internship at a community or hospital pharmacy and devote six months to the master’s thesis. The elective courses can be combined with thesis preparation into a one-year period of thesis study.
The programme is based on advanced courses in pharmaceutical disciplines. Students have the opportunity to specialise and tailor their studies to a certain extent to match their personal interests through their selection of thesis topic and elective courses.
Many students take courses or conduct their experimental thesis work outside the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences for instance at universities or industrial research laboratories aborad or in Denmark. Many students from other universities in Denmark or abroad attend the MSc courses at Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
The Master of Science degree in pharmacy confers the right to use the title MSc in pharmacy and qualifies the holder to practice, with full professional responsibility, at any pharmacy in Denmark and other EU countries.
The few students who do not want to spend their internship at a community pharmacy or hospital pharmacy can choose an alternative programme with an internship at another appropriate pharmaceutical enterprise, and/or elective courses. The internship can be combined with thesis preparation into a one-year study period. These graduates are not licensed to practice at any type of pharmacy. They bear the title MSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences (cand.scient.pharm.).
Language and admission
Danish is the language of instruction in the BSc and MSc in Pharmacy programmes at The Faculty. If your qualifying exam is not a Danish upper secondary exam (gymnasial eksamen) you are requested to show proof that you have passed an examination in “Danish as a Second Language” (“Studieprøven i dansk som andet sprog”) for entering into the BSc and MSc programmes in Pharmacy. Normally it takes at least 2 years to obtain the proficiency for passing the required examination. It is not possible to take the Danish examination abroad or to get a residence permit for Denmark for studing Danish language - it is thus not relevant for non Danish residents or speakers to obtain a BSc and MSc in pharmacy degree in Denmark.
