Medicinal chemistry – structure-based drug research

Research is focused on innovative basic drug research reflecting the complementary roles of University research and industrial drug research. The academic approach covers drug discovery, rational design, synthesis, computational chemistry and pharmacological characterization of potentially new drugs and biological targets. The research is multi-disciplinary and dedicated to a high integration of the projects, which are organized in three main research areas:

  1. Isolation and characterization of natural products as potential new drugs, including development of fast analyses of natural metabolites
  2. Identification and characterization of biological drug targets.
  3. Rational design and development of potential new drugs based on structure-based design.

The integration of the research programmes is reflected in highly interdisciplinary common projects, publications and PhD programmes and involves an extensive network of external collaboration partners, including drug industry and biotech-companies. The projects are generally concerned with one of the following key disease areas: neurodegenerative diseases, allergy, cancer, malaria and other infectious diseases.
