Mini-symposium: Mind the gap between efficacy and effectiveness

Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 12:30-16:30 in the Lundbeck Novo rooms

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Universitetsparken 2, 2100 Copenhagen

Insights and understanding of the problematic aspects of the gap between efficacy and effectiveness in pharmaceutical R&D and clinical practice is essential person entering the pharmaceutical workplace in the future. It is of paramount importance to the industry and healthcare systems because lack of effect or safety issues, during clinical development phases, continues to be one of the most serious weaknesses of the pharmaceutical industries drug discovery and development process. Equally problematic is the lack of clinical effectiveness due to sub-optimal pharmacotherapy in a post marketing situation where the pharmaceuticals become available to a broad population.

Presentation of the key speaker:

Henry McQuay is Nuffield Professor of Clinical Anaesthetics, University of Oxford, and a Professorial Fellow at Balliol College. His clinical expertise is in the management of chronic pain, both cancer and non-cancer. His research interests have included bench studies of analgesics, primary clinical trials of analgesic interventions and latterly using systematic review techniques to work out the relative efficacy and safety of analgesics. He has published many articles about pain matters. He is co-editor of the evidence-based medicine publication Bandolier (www.eBandolier.com), and has been clinical section editor for Pain.
