Neuropharmacology covers a large research area that includes scientific projects ranging from molecular and cellular pharmacology to in vivo studies.
The main focus is on the neurotransmitters glutamate and GABA, which involves studies of receptors, transporters and metabolism. Other transmitter systems such as endocannabinoids are also investigated. Moreover, immunopharmacology and inflammatory aspects of brain pathology such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and encephalomyelitis constitute important aspects of the research programme.
A substantial part of the research effort is dedicated to a better understanding of neurodegeneration, neuropatic pain and epilepsy. The overall aim is to identify pharmacological targets with the aim of developing novel therapeutic strategies.
