| Target Group: | The course is offered to Danish pharmacy students who are interested in international health issues especially students planning studies in foreign countries. The course is designed for those persons working or planning to work in national and international organizations, private pharmaceutical companies, control laboratories or health care facilities. It is also designed for foreign students who wish to study the Danish health care and drug distribution system. |
The aim of the course is to enrich and enhance the knowledge of the health sciences in issues of importance to international health care. It will provide a general overview of issues involved in the organization of health care systems and drug distribution today. The emphasis will be on familiarizing the students with the differences and similarities of drug distribution and pharmacy services in various countries and the role of pharmacists in them. Students are introduced to the main concepts and methods of National health and drug policy. Since the course will be taught in English it will make it accessible to foreign students and will give Danish students an opportunity to become familiar with English terminology within their field.
The course will be offered as a series of seminars which provide an overview of health policy and services, on the global, international and local level. The course will cover the basics of how health care systems are organized and thereafter the characteristics of various health systems and how to identify and compare systems. The emphasis will be on the differences and similarities of health and drug policies, drug distribution, and pharmacy services. The role of the pharmacy profession will be a feature throughout the course.
The students' active participation during the seminar is a requirement. A minimum of two hours' preparation prior to each seminar is expected including the preparation of assignments in relation to the seminar discussions. A final term paper (approx. 10 pages) in English on an international theme will be required.
The core staff will consist of permanent and temporary staff at the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy, Section for Social Pharmacy. Additional staff will be invited from national and international organizations.
Upon completion of the course students should be knowledgeable in the important issues and concepts related to international health care and pharmaceutical services. Students should be able to demonstrate an ability to compare and evaluate various forms of health care and drug distribution systems and the role of pharmacy in them. They should also be able to demonstrate an understanding for and use of English terminology in this field.
