Tools in Research

Course objectives

The course objectives are to enable participants to use and access information about copyright, to use information both ethically and legally correct, and to search, manipulate and incorporate information from Web of Knowledge into participants’ knowledge base.

A presentation of different ways of accessing e-books and State of the Art about Open Access is a part of the course.

General contents and topics

Part 1: Copyright, plagiarism, and other pitfalls:

  • Your lawful rights: My rights as a teacher and researcher (copyright related to authorship, webcast, and digital websites)
  • Creative commons - what about it?
  • Stop plagiarism - cite properly: Problems, websites
  • E-books - a new medium
  • Open access: gold, silver or hot air?

Part 2: Web of Knowledge in research:

  • Presentation of new and old tools in Web of Knowledge
  • Learn about the citation report, the H-index, and how to quickly create and export a report that details citation activity to the publications of an author or institution
  • Read the Citation Map: Create interactive maps of an article's citation data to visualise trends in your field of activity
  • Use citation search and Journal of Citation Report
  • Hands-on in Web of Science.

General information

The teaching methods will be lectures and a few hands-on. The number of hours is 7.

No formal evaluation will be made.

Course weight

0.3 ECTS credit point (European Credit Transfer System).

7 working hours (7 for course).

Total course fee: DKK 1,000.

No fee for PhD students from Danish universities.

The course addresses PhD students from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Applicants enrolled in part-time master's programs at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Copenhagen may participate in the course.
